Shoulder Arthroscopy Surgery

General Information

Shoulder joint is a prime joint in the whole body considering that it is used in almost every other activity that you execute. Pain, inflammation and numbness on movement or around the shoulder is something, Dr. Rohit Nalavade believes one should be apprehensive about and attend to it with their undivided attention.

Shoulder joint is the most mobile and complex joint in the human body. The upper arm bone (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula) and collarbone (clavicle) when assembled together form what is known as shoulder joint. The head of the humerus fits in the glenoid (rounded socket) in the scapula (shoulder blade). A combination of muscles and tendons surround the shoulder, giving it support, keeping the arm bone centered to the socket and allowing wide range of motion. These tissues are rotator cuffs. Bursa is a small sac of fluid that protects the tendons of the rotator cuff.

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery (MIS), performed under general anesthesia. Small incisions of about the size of a keyhole are made and arthroscope is inserted which projects pictures of your shoulder anatomy on a monitor. This helps Surgeons to detect the injured area. He then proceeds to make 1 or 3 small incisions through which other instruments are inserted. A tear in the muscle, tendon or cartilage is fixed. Any damaged tissue is removed. The entire surgery is executed is less than an hour.

Shoulder arthroscopy is recommended to you only when non-surgical treatments fall short of their roles of providing pain relief and recovery. Shoulder arthroscopy aims at treating following injuries

  • Bicep tendon injuries
  • Bone spurs
  • Frozen shoulders
  • Labrum tears
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff tears
  • Rotator cuff tendinitis
  • Shoulder impingement syndrome
  • Shoulder instability

Shoulder arthroscopy has become second most common orthopedic surgery after knee arthroscopy.
