Uni-compartmental knee replacement surgery or otherwise known as partial knee replacement surgery is alternative to the total knee replacement surgery. Dr. Rohit Nalavade recommends partial knee surgery if the deleterious symptoms are restricted to only one part of your knee, and conservative treatments (physical therapy, steroids, visco supplementation) have reached their therapeutic limits. Dr. Nalavade personally suggests you to understand the procedure of the surgery and structure to the knee joint, therefore helping you in making mindful decision.
Knee joint consists of the femur [thigh bone], the tibia [shin bone] and patella [kneecap]. These bones are connected to the each other by strong ligaments to provide stability to the knee. The knee can be divided into three compartments
During the surgery, small incision is made to gain access to the affected compartment, supporting structures of the knee are removed out of the way. Next step includes removal of damaged cartilage and bone tissue from surfaces of tibia and the femur in the arthritic area. Surgeon then concludes the surgery by insertion of prosthesis, which differs in size according to the patient. The uni-compartmental implant is designed to replace either the medial or lateral compartment. Once, the implants are positioned correctly, cement is used to secure these components. Dr. Rohit Nalavade offers non-cemented knee replacement implants as well.
With advancement in technology, he has adapted new methods like computer assisted techniques to perform partial knee replacement surgery. Usually the surgery lasts from 45 mins to 2 hours. Recovery period ranges from 3-6 weeks depending on the seriousness of the damage.
Pros of this surgery include quicker recovery, lesser risk, more natural motion of the knee, and this surgery is economical. I’m well aware of the cons of the surgery and wouldn’t hesitate to openly discuss them with you before the surgery.
